This collection documents Frederick Schenck Barkalow's research and professional activities in his career as a North Carolina State University instructor, zoologist, and conservationist. His most authoritative subject of research was the American Gray Squirrel, resulting in numerous articles and a book. He was also very involved in wildlife conservation from a hunter/outdoorsman perspective. The first series of Alphabetical Files contains personal and professional correspondence as well as information gathered on subjects of involvement. The Controversies series documents environmental issues in North Carolina including the expansion of Raleigh-Durham International Airport and its effect on the William B. Umstead State Park. (continued) The Organizations series contains correspondence and reports on Barkalow's activities in regional and national conservation organizations. The Photographs series includes a collection of prints and negatives from his Alabama Game Inventory conducted prior to World War II as well as extensive squirrel research photos. The Publications series consists of Barkalow's published material with supporting documentation. The Squirrel Studies series includes his extensive research into the American Gray Squirrel. The final series of University Duties documents his role as a teacher at NC State.

Born in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Barkalow received a B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1936. Three years later, he received an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Following the War, he received a Ph.D. in Zoology at Michigan.
